Iran has 'lost complete control' of Hormuz Strait: Rubio
Rubio said every dollar received by Iran’s “radical Shia clerics” was spent on Hezbollah and Hamas.
Iran has "lost complete control" of the Strait of Hormuz, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said yesterday (7 October), adding that Tehran's economy was in "total and complete freefall".
"The Strait of Hormuz is open. There's almost as much oil flowing out now as there was before this conflict began. So, they've lost complete control of the strait," Rubio told reporters during a visit to Athens.
He argued that "crippling" sanctions had pushed Iran's economy to the brink, saying it was "about to reach a place few countries in the world have been".
Rubio said every dollar received by Iran's "radical Shia clerics" was spent on Hezbollah and Hamas.
"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, simple, period, end of story," Rubio said. "Anything they agree to that would be acceptable to the United States has to ensure that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon."
He also argued that Iran was "trying to build up a conventional capability so massive that they would become untouchable".
Meanwhile, an adviser to the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, referring to an alternative route near the Oman coast, said transit routes in the strait that Iran considers illegal would soon be closed.
