Lone woman in Suvendu Adhikari Cabinet is a fashion designer-turned-politician

For Agnimitra Paul, the lone woman member of West Bengal's new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari cabinet, the transition from the world of fashion to politics and her rise in BJP hierarchy has been nothing less than dramatic.
Paul, 51, was today sworn in as a cabinet minister alongside Adhikari at a grand ceremony in Kolkata today.
Her elevation comes at a politically significant moment for BJP which has repeatedly projected itself as a champion of women's representation and has accused opposition parties of delaying the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislatures.
Paul's inclusion in the cabinet is seen as both symbolic and strategic in a state long dominated by women-centric political narratives under former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
A two-time legislator from Asansol Dakshin constituency and BJP's Bengal Vice-President, Paul emerged as one of the party's most recognisable women leaders during the recent assembly election campaign. She retained her seat by defeating TMC's Tapas Banerjee by over 40,000 votes.
Before entering politics in 2019, Paul was a well-known figure in Kolkata's fashion circle. She runs her fashion label "Inga" and designed outfits for Bollywood celebrities including Sridevi, Hema Malini and Mithun Chakroborty.
Her work often highlighted Bengal's traditional crafts such as Kantha embroidery and she showcased collections at events including Lakme Fashion Week.
Born and brought up in a middle-class family of doctors and academics in the industrial town of Asansol, Paul studied Botany before pursuing fashion technology and management studies.
Over the years, she built a successful career in fashion before shifting to politics with a focus on women's empowerment and grassroots mobilisation.
Two years after joining BJP, Paul became the head of the party's women's wing and later rose to the post of Vice-President, a position she assumed in January this year.
Paul made her electoral debut in the 2021 assembly elections, defeating TMC's Saayoni Ghosh in a closely fought contest.
She contested the 2022 Asansol parliamentary by-poll and the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Medinipur, finishing as runner-up to Shatrughan Sinha and June Malia, respectively.
