US warns citizens in Qatar of potential escalation, flight disruptions amid Middle East tensions

The United States has warned its citizens in Qatar to remain vigilant amid continuing tensions in the Middle East, citing the potential for unforeseen escalation, flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.
In a security alert issued yesterday (1 September), the US Embassy in Doha said the security environment in the region "remains complex" and advised Americans currently in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance.
"Americans travelling to and from the region should monitor information about airport and airline operations," the embassy said.

The advisory also warned that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted. It said Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans, including US businesses and other institutions.
The embassy said it remains open for routine American citizen services and limited visa services.
The US advised citizens to check their flight departure status directly with their airlines. It also directed travellers using Doha's Hamad International Airport to check flight information through the airport's flight-status service.
The embassy urged Americans in Qatar to enrol in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and facilitate contact with the embassy during emergencies.
Citizens were also advised to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, as well as areas with a heavy police presence, and to monitor local media and follow instructions from local authorities.
In the event of an aerial attack, Americans were advised to stay away from glass doors and windows and avoid fallen debris, while monitoring their phones and news outlets for official guidance.
The embassy further advised citizens to keep their phones charged, remain aware of their surroundings, maintain a low profile and exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the United States.
Americans whose flights are affected were advised to contact their airlines directly for information on flight changes.
