Saudi airstrike hits Sanaa airport as Yemen air campaign intensifies: Houthi media

A Saudi airstrike hit Sanaa International Airport in Yemen's Houthi-controlled capital on Sunday (11 October), as intensified air operations targeted areas held by the group across the country.

Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported the strike but did not immediately provide details of any casualties or damage at the airport, according to China's Xinhua news agency.

The channel also reported airstrikes elsewhere in northern and central Yemen. Seven strikes hit Harf Sufyan district in Amran province, destroying a poultry farm, while other attacks targeted telecommunications infrastructure in Al-Sayani district of Ibb province.

A separate Saudi airstrike hit the Bab Shu'ab neighbourhood in central Sanaa, injuring six people, including a woman and a child, the channel reported.

Meanwhile, a Yemeni military official told Xinhua on Sunday that Saudi warplanes had launched intensive strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in the southwestern province of Taiz, where fighting between government forces and the group has intensified.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said several strikes hit Houthi reinforcements heading towards front-line areas, leaving dozens of fighters killed or injured.

The latest attacks came amid a sharp escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with intensified Saudi air operations accompanying fierce ground battles across several fronts in Yemen.

The conflict has also increasingly spilled across Yemen's borders. A Houthi attack on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday (10 October) killed 12 people and injured 309 others, according to Saudi authorities.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and much of the country's north. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government, which is now based in Aden.
