Four soldiers killed, dozens wounded in Hezbollah drone strike on Israeli army base

At least four Israeli soldiers were killed in a Hezbollah drone attack targeting a military base near Binyamina in central Israel.

Another 51 Israeli soldiers were wounded in the attack, reports the Times of Israel, citing the Israeli Defence Force (IDF).

Of the injured, seven are in critical condition. 

However, other Israeli and international news outlets have reported a higher number of injuries.

Haaretz, BBC and Al Jazeera reported that the number of wounded was above 60, ranging from 61 to 67.

Earlier Sunday, Lebanon's Hezbollah said it launched "a squadron of attack drones" at a military training camp in Binyamina, south of Haifa, in response to Israeli air strikes on the country.

According to an AFP report, following the attack, Hezbollah warned Israel of more attacks if its offensive in Lebanon continues.

"The Iran-backed armed group 'promises the enemy that what it witnessed today in southern Haifa is nothing compared to what awaits it if it decides to continue its aggression against our noble and dear people' it says," reads the AFP report.

'No sirens'

The Israeli army is investigating why no sirens were sounded and why interception attempts failed, as well as the drone's route, according to Haaretz.

However, citing other Israeli media, BBC reported that the low-level drones were used in the attack.

"Israeli censorship rules prevent media outlets saying exactly where or what was targeted, but some media outlets say the location was hit by a low-level drone launched from Lebanon - a relatively unsophisticated weapon that appears not to have activated early warning alarms," reads the report

Following the hit, the Israeli Defense Force announced the interception of another drone launched from Lebanon over the Mediterranean Sea, near Haifa Bay.

An initial IDF investigation suggests that two drones were identified entering Israel via the sea. One was intercepted and tracking of the other drone was lost, according to a Haaretz report.

Earlier in the day, 28 Israeli soldiers were wounded by anti-tank fire in two separate incidents in Lebanon.

A Haaretz report, citing an IDF spokesperson, stated that two sustained serious wounds, while the others were moderately or lightly wounded.

Since midnight, more than 145 rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel. A fire broke out south of the Zurit community in the Carmiel area due to a rocket strike.

The IDF also reported the capture of a Hezbollah member in southern Lebanon.

Citing IDF sources, Haartez reported that the Hezbollah man was found in a tunnel 7 metres deep and 50 metres long, equipped with weapons and supplies for a prolonged stay.
