Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday (17 March) spoke to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan over the phone, conveying advance Eid greetings, as both leaders agreed on the importance of safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy route for New Delhi.
In a post on Facebook, Modi said India strongly condemned all attacks on the UAE that caused the loss of innocent lives and damage to civilian infrastructure.
He said, "Both leaders agreed on the importance of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and that India and the UAE would continue working together for the early restoration of peace, security, and stability in the region."
"Spoke with my brother HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, and conveyed advance Eid greetings," Modi said.
"We discussed the current situation in West Asia. Reiterated India's strong condemnation of all attacks on the UAE that have resulted in the loss of innocent lives and damage to civilian infrastructure. We agreed on the importance of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz," he added.
The Indian prime minister said, "We will continue to work together for the early restoration of peace, security, and stability in the region."
So far, three to four cargo ships flying the Indian flag have sailed through the strait in the last few days, with 20 more waiting to pass.
