Modi speaks to Iranian president, condemns attacks on critical infrastructure
The Indian prime minister stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that key shipping lanes remain open and secure
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian today (21 March), during which he condemned recent attacks on critical infrastructure in the West Asia region that threaten stability and disrupt global supply chains.
In a post on his official Facebook account, Modi said the leaders exchanged Eid and Nowruz greetings, and expressed hope that the festive season would bring peace, stability, and prosperity to West Asia.
The prime minister also stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that key shipping lanes remain open and secure, amid ongoing regional tensions.
Modi further appreciated Iran's continued support for the safety and security of Indian nationals residing in the country.
Modi's remarks come amid the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted oil and gas supplies to India and several other Asian countries since the war broke out on 28 February, following attacks by the US and Israel on Iran and Iran's subsequent retaliatory strikes.
This was the second time Modi spoke with Pezeshkian over the phone in the past nine days, the first conversation having taken place on 13 March.
