Morocco reaffirms commitment to collective African action at 39th AU Summit
Morocco’s international efforts include advocating on multilateral platforms, particularly at the UN, for a “partnership-based approach” to ensure African needs and realities are factored into initiatives aimed at peace and security
Morocco reaffirmed its dedication to "contributing to the strengthening of collective African action, in line with the enlightened Royal vision" during the 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) held on 14–15 Feb in Addis Ababa.
The Summit, which followed the 48th session of the AU Executive Council on 11–12 Feb, highlighted Morocco's role under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in promoting the "nexus of peace, security, and development in Africa" as a central topic for the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), also referred to as the "triple nexus." The Kingdom was elected, in the first round and for the third time, to serve on the PSC, says Hespress.
"The successful election represents recognition of Morocco's contribution and commitment to consolidating peace, security, and development since the Kingdom's return to the AU," the delegation said. During its first term on the PSC between 2018 and 2020, Morocco ensured the triple nexus remained a central agenda item.
Morocco's international efforts include advocating on multilateral platforms, particularly at the UN, for a "partnership-based approach" to ensure African needs and realities are factored into initiatives aimed at peace and security. The Kingdom's election to the PSC also acknowledged the King's conflict-resolution strategy for a stable Africa, based on "rational methods, respect for international law, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions."
The Kingdom contributed to the AU's 2026 thematic focus: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063." A side-event, initiated by Morocco, was held under the theme: "Water and sanitation in Africa: South-South cooperation for innovative solutions supporting climate resilience and inclusive human development." Morocco also proposed hosting a high-level conference on South-South cooperation in water and sanitation in 2026, ahead of the UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi in December.
The Summit highlighted King Mohammed VI's role as an AU leader on migration issues, applying a "comprehensive and humanistic approach" intended to transform migration into a "genuine economic lever for the continent."
On the sidelines, Morocco discussed African health sovereignty and reiterated its support for the African Medicines Agency (AMA), aiming for it to become a "central pillar of pharmaceutical regulation and health security in Africa." The Kingdom emphasized the need to build "strong, autonomous, and resilient African health systems" through aligned policy choices, funding, and partnerships.
