What could US have deployed as orbital weapon?

The US has confirmed that it has deployed a weapon in Earth's orbit, prompting questions about what military technology is already operating in space and how it could be used as major powers compete for strategic influence.
The BBC reports that Washington has disclosed few details about the system, with Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink saying the "on-orbit" weapon was needed to protect US forces from hostile action without revealing its capabilities or when it was deployed.

Space has been a militarised domain since the beginning of the space age.
In the late 1960s, the Soviet Union deployed weapons as part of its Istrebitel Sputnikov, or Satellite Destroyer, programme.
The satellites were designed to release projectiles that detonated and scattered shrapnel into the path of another spacecraft, usually an American satellite.
Advanced militaries already rely on satellites for reconnaissance, secure communications, missile-launch detection and precision targeting, with analysts expecting the use of military hardware in space to expand as technology becomes increasingly central to warfare.
Dr Bleddyn Bowen, an associate fellow in military sciences at the Royal United Services Institute and associate professor of astropolitics at Durham University, said he could only speculate about the newly announced US weapon.
He suggested it could be an electronic warfare or radio-jamming platform, potentially providing a non-destructive anti-satellite capability. Such systems can disrupt communications between satellites and ground stations.
"If you take out the radio links then your satellite is very useless," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
Bowen also said a more destructive system could not be ruled out, including a kinetic kill vehicle capable of releasing a projectile to destroy another satellite or a spacecraft designed to approach, inspect or grapple another satellite.
It is difficult to establish whether Russia and China already have similar weapons in orbit, but Juliana Suess, a former RUSI research fellow and researcher at Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, said both countries had demonstrated relevant activity.
In Russia's case, Suess pointed to activity that could indicate a co-orbital weapons test involving a projectile fired in orbit, although direct comparisons with the US system remain difficult without more information.
The US, Russia, China and India have all developed anti-satellite or counter-space capabilities, while Russia and China have increasingly conducted rendezvous and proximity operations, manoeuvring spacecraft close to other satellites.
Dr Rod Thornton, a reader in Russian Defence and Security Studies at King's College London, said such spacecraft could potentially become "hunter-killer" satellites capable of colliding with other satellites or pushing them into different orbits.
China has also demonstrated what Bowen described as a "space tug capability", allowing spacecraft to grapple with and move other satellites. Such technology could be used to remove space debris or interfere with operational satellites.
Some space weapons can generate large amounts of debris. Dr Mark Hilborne, a space security and weaponisation specialist at King's College London, said China's 2007 direct-ascent anti-satellite missile test left significant debris in orbit.
Suess said the debris remains dangerous because even tiny fragments can damage spacecraft at orbital speeds.
Risk of nuclear weapons in space
Thornton said Russia's comparatively limited satellite capabilities are offset by its missile arsenal, including ground-based missiles capable of reaching satellites in low Earth orbit and air-launched anti-satellite missiles.
He also said Russia could potentially use a nuclear weapon in space as a last resort, with the resulting electromagnetic pulse potentially damaging unprotected satellites across a wide area.
Bowen said a conflict in space would be unlikely to occur independently of events on Earth, suggesting the timing of the US announcement may have been more significant as a political signal than a technological breakthrough.
Bowen said China's expanding military satellite network could be one factor behind Washington's interest in space weapons, while its growing reliance on satellites has created more potential targets and vulnerabilities.
Thornton said a conflict in space could involve missiles, manoeuvring satellites designed to interfere with other spacecraft, and ground-based lasers.
