Türkiye voices support for Bangladesh’s bid for UNGA presidency
The meeting, held at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, marked the first bilateral engagement between the two foreign ministers following the formation of Bangladesh’s newly elected government
Hakan Fidan, the foreign minister of Türkiye, has reiterated his country's strong support for Bangladesh's candidacy for the presidency of the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman in Ankara yesterday (14 March).
The meeting, held at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, marked the first bilateral engagement between the two foreign ministers following the formation of Bangladesh's newly elected government.
Humayun Kabir, foreign adviser to the prime minister, was also present.
During the talks, both sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade, investment and workforce mobility.
Dr Khalilur Rahman highlighted the importance of boosting Turkish foreign investment in Bangladesh and underscored the potential for expanding exports of skilled human resources from Bangladesh to Türkiye.
At a joint press briefing after the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding friendly and brotherly ties between the two countries.
They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern and expressed support for ongoing peace efforts related to Gaza.
A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Diplomacy Academy of Türkiye and the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy aimed at enhancing institutional cooperation in diplomatic training and capacity building.
Türkiye also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh on both bilateral and multilateral platforms.
In this context, Ankara expressed its unequivocal backing for Bangladesh's bid to preside over the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly.
Later, Hakan Fidan hosted an iftar and working dinner in honour of the visiting Bangladesh delegation, where the two sides continued discussions on expanding cooperation and strengthening their strategic partnership.
Both sides expressed optimism that the outcomes of the visit would further deepen ties and open new avenues of cooperation between Bangladesh and Türkiye in the coming years.
