Trump asked for tougher terms in proposed Iran war deal: US media
The latest revisions could prolong negotiations by several more days before a decision is reached on whether the deal would bring an end to the conflict.
President Donald Trump has sought to revise several terms of a proposal aimed at ending the Middle East war, US media reported on Saturday (30 May), as a final agreement remains elusive.
The New York Times reported that Trump's revisions involved strengthening certain provisions of the deal and that the updated framework had been sent back to Iran for consideration, citing officials familiar with the negotiations.
The report said it was not immediately clear what the changes entailed. However, news site Axios reported that Trump wanted to reinforce several aspects of the agreement that he personally considered important, including the handling of Iran's nuclear material.
The latest revisions could prolong negotiations by several more days before a decision is reached on whether the deal would bring an end to the conflict, which began after the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on 28 February.
US sources previously told AFP that the proposal had been awaiting Trump's approval, but he made no decision following a White House Situation Room meeting on Friday (29 May).
Trump has said his priorities for any agreement include ensuring that Iran never develops nuclear weapons and reopening the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world's oil supply passes.
