Toyota has unveiled a revolutionary solution for charging electric vehicles (EV)— swappable hydrogen fuel cell batteries.

This new solution will be introduced at the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2024.

These portable hydrogen cartridges resemble oversized AA batteries. They can be swapped out when depleted, so there is no longer a need for charging stations.

The batteries aim to simplify the refuelling process for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles and could incentivise broader adoption of hydrogen technology.

According to media reports, Toyota's breakthrough reduces the size and weight of hydrogen tanks, making them portable and versatile enough to power cars, homes, and even cooking appliances.

Partnering with companies including g Rinnai Corporation, Toyota aims to integrate these cartridges into various applications, fostering the development of a hydrogen-based society.

These hydrogen cartridges promise a game-changing approach to sustainable energy and EV charging.

Toyota is showcasing a series of sustainable developments at the Japan Mobility Bizweek later this month – including its vision of a portable hydrogen cartridge future to provide 'swappable' power for next-gen hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
