The 43-year-old actor reportedly entered the water as part of a scene for an ongoing television serial but unexpectedly submerged, reports The Times of India.
Crew members and technicians immediately attempted a rescue, but Banerjee failed to resurface.
He was pulled from the water after several minutes and rushed to a hospital in Digha, but was declared dead before medical staff could stabilise him, sources said.
An autopsy examination is expected to be carried out at Digha Hospital.
Rahul, best known for his work in Bengali cinema and television, was filming a scene for his ongoing TV serial when the accident occurred.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Tollywood community, where he had been active for decades in film, television and theatre.
