India's NIA arrests another person over alleged JMB plot
Probe alleges efforts to radicalise and recruit vulnerable youth.
India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another person from West Bengal in connection with an alleged conspiracy by an offshoot of the banned terror group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), officials said today (11 October).
Several digital devices, including mobile phones and memory cards, were seized from the accused, who was arrested today, according to an NIA statement.
On 29 September, the agency arrested 13 people after conducting searches at 16 locations across Assam, West Bengal and Kerala in connection with the case.
The investigation centres on Imam Majumder Kafila (IMK), an offshoot of JMB allegedly involved in efforts to radicalise vulnerable youths and expand the banned organisation's network in India.
According to the NIA, the investigation has uncovered an alleged conspiracy to spread IMK's extremist ideology in West Bengal and northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura.
The accused allegedly sought to promote the group's agenda, radicalise vulnerable young people and recruit individuals to strengthen its presence in India.
The NIA said Imam Mahmud Habibullah, a senior JMB member, had established IMK to advance the banned organisation's agenda in India.
The latest arrest follows the NIA's filing of a chargesheet against 11 accused before a special NIA court in Guwahati, Assam, on 25 June.
The chargesheet invokes various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
