The editorial board of the New York Times recently published a highly critical opinion piece on US President Donald Trump's reelection campaign.

The article, titled, "END OUR NATIONAL CRISIS: The Case Against Donald Trump," has been vehement in its opposing of Donald Trump as the president of the US; pointing to to several aspects of the Trump administration as "ruinous."

Opening lines of the opinion piece deems Trump's tenure as a threat to the US democracy, saying: "Donald Trump's re-election campaign poses the greatest threat to American democracy since World War II."

The staunch disapproval of the editorial board of Trump's presidency continued with it call calling his first term as "ruinous tenure" that has "gravely damaged the United States at home and around the world."

It stated that President Trump abused the power of his office, denying the legitimacy of his political opponents and "shattering the norms that have bound the nation together for generations."

"He has subsumed the public interest to the profitability of his business and political interests. He has shown a breathtaking disregard for the lives and liberties of Americans. He is a man unworthy of the office he holds," the article remarked.

"The editorial board does not lightly indict a duly elected president. During Mr Trump's term, we have called out his racism and his xenophobia. We have critiqued his vandalism of the postwar consensus, a system of alliances and relationships around the globe that cost a great many lives to establish and maintain," they wrote.

"We have, again and again, deplored his divisive rhetoric and his malicious attacks on fellow Americans. Yet when the Senate refused to convict the president for obvious abuses of power and obstruction, we counseled his political opponents to focus their outrage on defeating him at the ballot box."

The opinion piece said that the November 3 election can be a turning point; adding it is an election about the country's future, and what path its citizens wish to choose.

Describing Trump's first tenure as a test of resilience for the American democracy, the article continued with its theme of dissent for the Trump administration saying: "Four more years would be worse."
