Pakistan's Sharif says he nominated Trump for Nobel Peace Prize won by Pillay
Sharif said on X that Trump had played a "historic role" in helping to secure a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after India launched Operation Sindoor in May 2025
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan had nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following their military confrontation in May 2025.
Sharif said on X that Trump had played a "historic role" in helping to secure a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after India launched Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire, but India has rejected his account, saying the agreement was reached directly between New Delhi and Islamabad at Pakistan's request, without third-party mediation, says NDTV.
Indian officials, including Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, have said the ceasefire resulted from bilateral discussions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also told Trump during a phone conversation that India would not accept external mediation.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay, 85, recognising her work in international law, human rights and the prosecution of war crimes and genocide.
Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes announced the award in Oslo. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million, and will be presented on 10 December.
Pillay, a former UN high commissioner for human rights and International Criminal Court judge, joked in a video after the announcement: "If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump!"
Trump responded by sharing a post on Truth Social calling Pillay a "hater" and asserting that the award had been demeaned.
Trump has said he was unlikely to receive the prize, but has also claimed he had already received it "indirectly" after 2025 laureate María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, presented him with her medal at the White House in January.
The Nobel Committee has clarified that Nobel prizes cannot be shared or transferred once awarded.
Leaders from Cambodia and Israel have also said they submitted nominations for Trump.
Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize can be submitted by qualified individuals, including government members, heads of state, judges of international courts in The Hague, foreign policy directors, university professors and former laureates. Self-nominations are invalid.
Nominations for the 2026 prize closed on 31 January. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee registered 287 candidates, comprising 208 individuals and 79 organisations, and compiled a shortlist of 20 to 30 candidates before making its final decision.
