India's Adani Group to invest Rs1 trillion in West Bengal
Adani said half of the hospital’s beds would be reserved for economically weaker sections.
India's business tycoon Gautam Adani today (24 September) announced that his Adani Group would invest more than Rs1 trillion in West Bengal by 2035 in sectors ranging from ports, logistics, power, roads and data centres.
Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation for a 2,000-bed hospital in New Town near Kolkata alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Adani said the group would spend Rs4,000 crore on the multi-speciality hospital, with total investment in the facility exceeding Rs10,000 crore.
Adani said half of the hospital's beds would be reserved for economically weaker sections. The facility will also house a medical college, along with research and healthcare infrastructure.
"We will invest over 4,000 crore rupees in this hospital, college and research facility," Adani said, adding that the hospital and related institutions would generate more than 10,000 jobs across West Bengal's healthcare ecosystem.
The Adani Group also announced support for the restoration of Kolkata's historic Writers' Building, which was originally used as an administrative office by the East India Company and later housed offices of the West Bengal government.
Adani also pointed to West Bengal's location as an advantage for the group's infrastructure plans, saying the state could serve as a maritime and logistics link between India's industrial heartland, the Northeast and the Bay of Bengal.
