Assam CM welcomes Bengal’s land transfer to BSF for Bangladesh border fence
Strict vigilance and fencing of the India-Bangladesh border were very important for the security of Assam and the region, he says
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today (13 May) welcomed the West Bengal cabinet's decision to hand over land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing the frontier with Bangladesh, saying it was very important for the security of the state and the North East.
Strict vigilance and fencing of the India-Bangladesh border were very important for the security of Assam and the region, Sarma told a press conference in Guwahati after chairing the first cabinet meeting of his second term in office.
"Our fight against infiltration always faced a problem because there was a huge gap in fencing between Bangladesh and West Bengal," he said.
"Now that West Bengal has a BJP government, we can no longer complain of that because people have voted for a double-engine government at the Centre and the state," Sarma said.
A couple of days ago, Bengal's BJP government, headed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, at its first cabinet meeting, decided to hand over land to BSF within 45 days for the fencing of the border with Bangladesh.
The Assam chief minister said his government's efforts to stop infiltration would be futile without similar measures in West Bengal.
