2,217 Bangladeshi nationals sheltering in Mizoram: State home minister

A total of 2,217 Bangladeshi nationals have taken shelter in India's Mizoram state as refugees, State Home Minister K Sapdanga told the legislative assembly on Wednesday (12 March).
Besides, 33,505 Myanmar nationals and 5,633 internally displaced people from neighbouring Manipur state have also taken shelter in Mizoram, the Times of India quoted the minister as saying.
The reason for such large number of refugees in the northeastern state is political instability and unrest in Bangladesh and Myanmar, the minister explained while asking for an increase in budget from the central government.
According to the minister, a high-level committee has been formed to look after the matter of the refugees.
During the assembly session, the minister further said a government-level talk was conducted between Mizoram and Assam governments on the longstanding border disputes and anther meeting is due in April.
