Spain Prepares to Receive MV Hondius After Deadly Hantavirus Cases
A deadly Hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius has left three people dead and several others under medical monitoring. The cruise ship remains anchored off Cape Verde and is preparing to sail to the Canary Islands after local authorities said they lacked the facilities needed to manage the crisis. Two seriously ill crew members, including the ship's doctor, are expected to be evacuated for urgent treatment.
Spain has agreed to assist the vessel, calling it a moral and legal obligation, as Spanish citizens are among those on board. The World Health Organization is also monitoring concerns over possible human-to-human transmission linked to the outbreak.
