Is low salt as unhealthy as excess salt?
Salt is essential for our body, but many people consume more than necessary. According to the WHO, adults need about 5 grams of salt per day, but in reality, the global average intake is around 10 grams. Excess salt increases blood pressure and the risk of stroke and heart disease. Reducing salt is beneficial, blood pressure decreases, and stroke and heart-related deaths are reduced. However, very low salt intake can also be harmful for some people. The safest approach is to consume a moderate amount of salt and be aware of hidden salt in processed foods.
