Lebanese government in turmoil over Hezbollah disarmament issue
The Lebanese government plans to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has ordered the army to draw up a plan to disarm all non-state forces, including Hezbollah. The United States has supported the initiative and promised reconstruction assistance. However, Hezbollah has rejected the proposal outright and boycotted the cabinet meeting. According to them, giving up arms means surrendering to Israel. Some parties consider the disarmament move provocative. According to them, the process of disarming non-state forces could increase the risk of civil war in Lebanon if the process begins.
