Prime Minister Tarique Rahman seeks updates on Bangladeshis amid Middle East conflict
As per the prime minister’s directives, the minister and state minister for civil aviation and tourism are working on the matter
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought updates on the condition of Bangladeshis in the Middle East, including Iran, amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman met the prime minister at the Secretariat today (1 March). The prime minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir, was also present at the meeting.
Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Atikur Rahman Ruman, confirmed the development.
"The foreign minister and the prime minister's adviser on foreign affairs met the prime minister this morning. Due to the incidents in Iran, the prime minister inquired about the condition of Bangladeshis in Middle Eastern countries and gave necessary directives," he said.
"As many Middle East-bound flights have been cancelled due to the situation, various related issues were discussed at the meeting," Ruman added.
He further said the prime minister is closely monitoring how passengers stranded at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport are being looked after.
"As per the prime minister's directives, the minister and state minister for civil aviation and tourism are working on the matter. The state minister for civil aviation has been present at the airport since morning. The minister for expatriates' welfare is also actively engaged in this work," Ruman said.
The prime minister arrived at his office at 9:10am and held a series of meetings throughout the day.
Later, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu also met the prime minister.
The additional press secretary said, "The prime minister discussed post-earthquake disaster management and directed the formulation of an action plan in this regard."
After the meeting, Dulu said the prime minister had instructed authorities to build a force of 100,000 volunteers in Dhaka to respond to post-earthquake disasters.
Later in the day, power and energy minister also met the prime minister, the additional press secretary added.
