Technology support centre to expand IP services, boost commercialisation of research

The FBCCI Innovation and Research Centre (FBCCI IRC) and the Department of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today (3 June) to establish a Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC), aimed at strengthening Bangladesh's innovation ecosystem and supporting the commercialisation of research.
According to the MoU, the TISC will offer patent search assistance, technology information services, intellectual property (IP) awareness programmes, and support for protecting and commercialising innovative research.
It is also expected to facilitate technology transfer and strengthen collaboration between research institutions and industry, helping transform research outcomes into market-ready products and services.

The centre will operate under the global TISC framework of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which enables innovators to access high-quality technological information and IP resources. Similar centres have recently been established at universities and research institutions across Bangladesh to promote innovation-led development and strengthen research capacity.
Speaking at the event, FBCCI IRC Chairman Jashim Uddin described the initiative as a milestone for Bangladesh's innovation-driven economy. He said easier access to patent information and technical knowledge would help entrepreneurs, startups, researchers and industries develop globally competitive innovations and accelerate the commercialisation of research.
He added that FBCCI IRC would continue working to bridge the gap between research, industry and business, enabling innovative ideas to reach the market more effectively.
DPDT Director General Jahangir Hossain reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to expanding the national TISC network and making intellectual property services more accessible. Strengthening IP awareness and support mechanisms, he said, is essential for fostering innovation and enhancing Bangladesh's competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
Officials said the collaboration reflects the shared commitment of DPDT and FBCCI IRC to promoting innovation, enhancing research capabilities and leveraging intellectual property for sustainable economic development.
