Facebook Marketplace is a popular place to buy and sell personal goods online, with no fees, where buying and selling happens with some clicks. But amidst the bargains and treasures, scams are lurking.
Here are tips that will help you face the challenges of the online marketplace and trade with confidence.

Too good to be true? Then it probably is

Unbelievably low prices that make your jaw drop often come with a catch.

Imagine scrolling through Facebook Marketplace and stumbling upon a high-end gadget at a fraction of its usual cost. Excitement fills the air as you contemplate your luck. But pause and ponder – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Scammers love reeling you in with jaw-dropping prices for non-existent or counterfeit products. Protect yourself by inspecting items in person before parting with your cash.

Electronics: Try before you buy

Purchasing electronics without testing could lead to disappointment.

You are eyeing a sleek smartphone in the Marketplace and the price seems fair. But remember, appearances can be deceiving. Scammers might slip non-functional electronics into the mix.

The solution? Meet the seller in a public space, power up the device, and ensure it functions as promised. Don't get caught in such traps.

Phone code requests: A web of deceit

Requesting verification codes can be used to take over an account.

You have struck a deal and the other party asks you to verify yourself through a text code. Seems harmless, right? Wrong.

This innocent-looking code can grant scammers access to your accounts or device. Remember, no one needs a code to prove you are real. Stay cautious and never share these codes.

Beware of giveaway phishing

Free giveaways that demand personal information are almost always dubious.

Imagine getting something for free on Facebook Marketplace, but to claim it, you are asked to fill out a form with personal details. Beware, as it might be a phishing scam. Legitimate giveaways won't ask for sensitive data. Guard your personal information like a treasure.

Report suspected scams

If you sense a scam, cut communications immediately and report it to Facebook: Open the listing, click the three-dot menu, and select "Report listing."

You can also flag sellers by hovering over the seller's name, clicking "Report," and choosing "Scam."

Let these insights be your shield as you journey through Facebook Marketplace. With knowledge on your side, you can trade smartly and securely.
