First ever car with integrated Gemini assistant is here
By embedding Gemini AI into the new EV, Volvo adds to a run of wins for Google, coming right after the latter’s AI assistant was confirmed to power Apple’s Siri
Volvo has lifted the curtain on the EX60, a mid-sized electric SUV that looks designed to steady the company's electric ambitions after a difficult run.
On paper, it is the most convincing EV Volvo has announced in years, blending long range, serious performance and a deep integration of Google's Gemini AI.
Besides impressive specifications, the most important shift sits inside the cabin. The EX60 becomes Volvo's first car with Gemini built directly into its Android Automotive system. Unlike older voice assistants, Gemini is designed for natural, multi-step conversation.
Drivers can search emails for addresses, plan trips, check whether luggage will fit in the boot, or manage bookings using linked Google services. Volvo says future updates will allow Gemini to draw on the car's cameras, letting it answer questions about what lies ahead on the road.
This intelligence runs on what Volvo calls HuginCore, a new software-defined architecture powered by Qualcomm cockpit hardware and Nvidia's Drive AGX Orin for safety systems. The result, Volvo claims, is faster maps, near-instant responses and smoother infotainment on a curved 15-inch OLED display.
Underneath, the EX60 sits on Volvo's new SPA3 platform, using gigacasting to reduce weight and cut its carbon footprint. It will also be offered in rugged Cross Country form with raised suspension.
The top-spec EX60 P12 delivers up to 670 horsepower and a claimed range of around 400 miles from its largest battery. Even the entry version offers more than 300 miles. Charging is equally competitive. Using the new North American Charging Standard, the EX60 can add well over 160 miles of range in about 10 minutes, with a 10-80% charge taking less than 20 minutes.
