Development banks under pressure to compensate harmed communities

Illegally logged timber, which has been confiscated, is floated down the Guamá River Delta in the northeastern state of Para April 14, 2010. Brazilian Federal Police, IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment), Instituto Chico Mendes Biodiversity (ICMBio), Amazon protection system (Sipam) and National Force, started on Monday an operation called "Delta" to combat the deforestation of the Amazon and the illegal trade in wood. More than 5,000 cubic meters (176,751 cubic feet) of tree trunks and wood cut from native species have been confiscated in Pará State, according to officials.
