Beyond the philanthropic veneer: LafargeHolcim’s paradigm shift in community impact
Beyond producing building materials, LafargeHolcim Bangladesh PLC is positioning itself as a company focused on circular economy practices, climate resilience, and long-term social investment in one of the country’s most remote regions
Beyond producing building materials, LafargeHolcim Bangladesh PLC (LHB) is advancing sustainable construction by embedding circularity, climate resilience, and long-term community well-being at the core of its operations in one of the country's most remote regions.
As Bangladesh continues to grow and urbanize, the need for resilient and sustainable infrastructure has never been greater. At LHB, we believe progress goes beyond construction. It means building responsibly, supporting local communities and creating long-term value for society.
Sustainability is at the core of our business strategy. By focusing on scaling our sustainable offering to meet customer demand, advancing circular construction, innovating to accelerate decarbonization and building a nature-positive future, we are demonstrating that industrial growth and positive social impact go hand in hand; helping build progress for people and the planet.
Decarbonizing the future of construction
The building materials industry has an important role to play in accelerating the transition to low-carbon construction. At LHB, we embrace this responsibility through transparent action and continuous innovation. Our ambition is to entirely decouple growth from environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of quality, durability and performance.
By optimizing our clinker-to-cement ratio and integrating advanced mineral components, we are expanding our portfolio of low-carbon cement solutions that significantly reduce emissions while meeting demanding structural requirements.
At LHB, sustainability is not separate from our business; it is embedded in how we build progress for people, communities, and the environment.
GEOCYCLE: Our commitment towards circular economy
Beyond reducing emissions, LHB is advancing circular construction through its sustainable waste management business, Geocycle. Using innovative co-processing technology, we transform more than 50,000 tons of industrial, municipal and agricultural non-recyclable materials annually into alternative fuels, reducing fossil fuel usage while helping minimize the waste accumulating in landfills and waterways.
Today, alternative fuels already consist of 11% of fuel consumption, supporting both decarbonization and responsible waste management.
LHB has also established the first Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of its kind in Bangladesh through a pioneering public-private partnership with Sylhet City Corporation (SCC). The facility in Sylhet is segregating non-recyclable materials, especially the plastics which are co-processed at the Geocycle facility in Chhatak Plant of LHB. Currently Geocycle is co-processing around 10,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually
Through Geocycle, we are helping build a more circular economy by turning non-recyclable materials into valuable resources and accelerating sustainable solutions for Bangladesh.
Growing together with our neighbors: Moving beyond traditional CSR
At LHB, we believe meaningful community well-being is created through long-term partnership, not short-term initiatives. For more than 25 years, our Community Development Center (CDC) near the Chhatak plant has supported local communities through healthcare, education, skills development and emergency response.
Today, the CDC serves as a vital hub for the region, including a healthcare center, primary school and vocational training facility. Our medical teams have treated more than 400,000 people and continue to support over 30,000 patients annually, while six satellite sub-centers help extend access to remote communities. At the same time, our school has provided foundational education to more than 7,000 students, helping empower the next generation.
We are equally focused on economic empowerment. Through our Skill Development Center, more than 1,000 young people, primarily women, have received vocational training in areas such as tailoring, weaving and poultry farming, supporting entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
Beyond our direct operations, LHB contributes to the livelihoods of more than 1,000 local people and supports a broader ecosystem of suppliers and small businesses across our value chain.
The CDC also plays a critical role during times of crisis. During the devastating floods of 2022 and 2024, the center was transformed into an emergency shelter, providing safety for more than 600 displaced individuals while supporting over 5,500 vulnerable families with essential relief supplies.
At LHB, building progress means investing in people, strengthening communities, and helping create long-term resilience for the future.
Operating in remote areas
Operating in geographically remote areas brings unique operational and social challenges. LHB connects its limestone quarry in Meghalaya to the Chhatak plant through a unique 17-kilometer cross-border conveyor belt, a landmark engineering solution spanning regions with historically limited access to essential services.
From the beginning, LHB recognized that operating a world-class industrial facility in such an environment also requires a long-term commitment to community development and regional resilience. As a result, sustainability and social impact have been embedded into our operational approach, ensuring our presence contributes to broader economic and community progress.
Through investments in healthcare, education, livelihoods and environmental stewardship, LHB continues to support sustainable development in the region while helping improve quality of life for local communities.
This commitment has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Green Factory Award, A Better Tomorrow CSR Award, SDG Brand Champion Award, and the FICCI Sustainability Game Changer Award reinforcing our belief that sustainable growth and positive social impact go hand in hand.
From CSR to ESG excellence
The global business landscape is rapidly evolving from traditional CSR approaches toward more comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks. At LHB, we believe this transition is essential to building long-term, responsible growth.
For us, sustainability goes beyond how value is distributed, it is about how value is created. ESG principles are integrated into the way we operate, make decisions, and deliver impact across our business and communities.
Our inclusion among the top 10 companies on Bloomberg's Sustainability List in Bangladesh reflects this commitment, alongside recognition from ICMAB and ICSB for Corporate Governance Excellence. These achievements reinforce our focus on transparency, responsible business practices and sustainable value creation.
Climate resilience: A strategic imperative
For Bangladesh, climate change is no longer a distant challenge; it is a reality already impacting communities, infrastructure, and economic resilience. Increasing floods, rising salinity and changing climate patterns continue to place growing pressure on the built environment.
At LHB, climate resilience is embedded into our operational priorities and product innovation strategy. We are developing solutions designed to help infrastructure withstand local environmental conditions while supporting long-term durability and performance.
This commitment is reflected in our specialized product portfolio. Holcim Water Protect is engineered to improve resistance against dampness and moisture, while Holcim Coastal Guard is specifically designed to address the challenges of salinity in coastal regions. Together, these solutions help strengthen the resilience and longevity of infrastructure across Bangladesh.
Sustainability: The ultimate competitive advantage
At LHB, sustainability is not viewed as a regulatory obligation, but as a driver of long-term value creation and responsible growth. Central to this commitment is Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), our number one priority.
Guided by our Zero Harm ambition, we continuously strengthen our safety culture through rigorous standards, training and operational discipline to protect people, communities and the environment.
By combining industrial growth with environmental stewardship and community impact, we are helping shape a more resilient and sustainable future for Bangladesh; where economic progress and social development advance together.
