The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision following a meeting in Guwahati yesterday (6 October), with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirming Mandhana's appointment.
The 29-year-old left-handed opener made her India debut in 2013 and has served as Harmanpreet's deputy. She has previously captained India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs.
Mandhana recently became the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket. She also holds the record for most international centuries in women's cricket across formats, with 18.
"To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply," Mandhana said.
She also acknowledged Harmanpreet's contribution as captain.
"I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey.
"I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and look forward to working with the team, learning along the way and giving my best to take Indian Cricket forward."
Mandhana has led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to two Women's Premier League (WPL) titles.
India's next assignment will be a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe at home, beginning on 16 October. The series will be followed by three ODIs.
