Shakib backs Bangladesh to shine in Pakistan
The veteran all-rounder made his competitive return to cricket after more than six months in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he is currently representing Lahore Qalandars.

Shakib Al Hasan is optimistic about Bangladesh's upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, expressing excitement about the challenge and the talent on display from both sides. The veteran all-rounder made his competitive return to cricket after more than six months in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he is currently representing Lahore Qalandars.
The Qalandars have somewhat become a mirror of Bangladesh in this year's PSL, featuring three Bangladeshi cricketers—Shakib, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Rishad Hossain. Rishad was part of the squad from the beginning and performed well before briefly returning for national duty in the UAE. He has since rejoined Lahore. Mehidy and Shakib entered the side as replacements for Sikandar Raza and the injured Daryl Mitchell, respectively. In the eliminator against Karachi Kings, only Shakib made it to the playing XI.
In that match, he bowled a single over, conceding just four runs and taking a wicket. The match situation didn't allow for further spells, but Lahore still secured victory to book a place in the second qualifier, where they will face Islamabad United.
Speaking to Pakistan's leading news outlet Geo News, Shakib shared his impressions about being part of the PSL and praised the environment within the team. "I've always enjoyed playing in the PSL," said Shakib. "I've been a part of the league since the beginning and have previously played for Zalmi. Over the past decade, I've seen how far the league has come. The environment here is amazing. We've faced each other many times before, but now that we're playing together, the understanding between us is even better. It's been a fantastic experience."
Shakib also reflected on his return to competitive cricket. On 18 may, in the playoff-deciding match against Peshawar Zalmi, he played his first competitive fixture since late 2023. Understandably, he admitted it was initially difficult to adjust.
"It's always exciting to return after a break, but it takes time for the body to adjust," said Shakib. "I felt a bit uncomfortable at first, but after the first match, I was able to compose myself better. I hope I can perform well in tomorrow's game."
The 37-year-old is not currently involved in Bangladesh's national setup due to political and contextual complications. Although disappointed, he is using this time to stay active in franchise cricket. "I've signed a few contracts, so you'll see me in more leagues over the next few months," he added.
Despite his absence from the national side, Shakib remains invested in Bangladesh's progress. The Tigers are scheduled to face Pakistan in a three-match T20I series—reduced from the initially planned five matches. Shakib is hopeful the young players in both squads will seize their opportunity.
"This is undoubtedly going to be a great series," Shakib said. "Both teams have several talented young players who are eager to prove themselves. I'm really excited about it."
