Rudi Garcia named Belgium’s new coach

Belgium's football federation announced on Friday that Frenchman Rudi Garcia has been appointed as the new national team coach, following the sacking of Domenico Tedesco.

The 60-year-old, who has previously managed Napoli, Lyon, and Roma, will be formally introduced at a press event later in the day. Garcia's appointment marks a crucial step for Belgium as they look to rejuvenate the Red Devils after a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign.

Last week, Belgium parted ways with Italian-German coach Tedesco after their early exit from the tournament and a string of underwhelming performances in the Nations League. The team now faces a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.

Garcia's most recent managerial stint at Napoli lasted only five months in 2023, a challenging period following the club's Scudetto-winning season. However, he rose to prominence during his tenure at French side Lille between 2008 and 2013.

Belgium will begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying journey with an away fixture against North Macedonia in June.

Tedesco, who was appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martínez, had been tasked with overseeing the transition as Belgium's "golden generation" made way for new talent.
