Real Madrid exit Champions League as Arsenal secure semi-final spot after 16 years
The second leg of the quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu ended 2-1 in favour of the visitors, securing a 5-1 aggregate victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Real Madrid's hopes of clinching their 16th Champions League title were dashed on 16 April 2025, as they were eliminated by Arsenal. The second leg of the quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu ended 2-1 in favour of the visitors, securing a 5-1 aggregate victory for Mikel Arteta's side.
As expected, Real Madrid started the match strongly, but it was Arsenal who had the best chance to take the lead in the first half. A foul by Raul Asencio on Mikel Merino inside the penalty area gave Bukayo Saka the opportunity to extend Arsenal's aggregate lead to four goals. However, Saka's poor penalty was saved by Thibaut Courtois, missing a golden chance to put Arsenal in control.
Real Madrid also had a penalty opportunity when Kylian Mbappé was brought down by Declan Rice. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, much to Arsenal's relief.
In the second half, Arsenal took control with a brilliant goal from Saka. After his penalty miss, he redeemed himself with a delightful chipped finish over Courtois to make it 1-0 on the night and a commanding four-goal lead on aggregate. However, Real Madrid responded almost immediately. A mistake from William Saliba allowed Vinicius Junior to take advantage, and he slotted the ball past Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to reduce the deficit.
Real Madrid continued to press for a comeback, but their hopes were further dashed as they lost Mbappé to an ankle injury. Arsenal sealed their progression late on when Gabriel Martinelli raced clear and calmly slotted past Courtois to secure a 2-1 victory on the night.
This result means Real Madrid now have only La Liga and the Copa del Rey to focus on, with increased pressure likely to mount on head coach Carlo Ancelotti after their Champions League exit.
