Portugal, Spain rivalry stays tight ahead of World Cup last-16 meeting
The Iberian neighbours will meet in the Fifa World Cup 2026 Round of 16, with Spain holding the historical edge but recent encounters showing a tightly contested rivalry.
Portugal and Spain will write another chapter in one of international football's longest-running rivalries when they meet in the Fifa World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
The clash will be the 42nd meeting between the Iberian neighbours, a rivalry that dates back to 1921. Spain hold the upper hand historically with 17 wins, while Portugal have won six times. The remaining 18 matches have ended in draws.
Recent encounters, however, have been closely contested, with six of the last seven matches finishing level after 90 minutes, underlining the competitive balance between the two sides.
The most recent meeting came in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League final, where Portugal defeated Spain on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra time to secure their second Nations League title.
The two sides have previously met twice at the World Cup.
Their most iconic clash came in the group stage of the 2018 edition, when they played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick, including a late free-kick.
Their other World Cup meeting came in the Round of 16 in 2010, when Spain secured a 1-0 victory through David Villa's second-half strike before going on to win their maiden World Cup title.
Overall, draws have been the defining feature of the rivalry, with the teams sharing points on 18 occasions, including a run of five consecutive draws between 1984 and 2002.
