Manchester United secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on 17 April 2025, advancing to the semi-finals with a 7-6 aggregate scoreline.
In a game full of excitement and twists, United initially took a strong lead, going 2-0 up with goals from Manuel Ugarte (10') and Diogo Dalot (45+1').
However, Lyon responded fiercely, levelling the tie at 2-2 with goals from Corentin Tolisso (71') and Nicolas Tagliafico (77').
The match saw Lyon reduced to 10 men just before the 90th-minute mark, and they took the initiative in extra time, scoring twice to lead 4-2. However, United's resilience shone through, and they mounted a remarkable comeback.
Bruno Fernandes scored a 114th-minute penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-4, before Kobbie Mainoo (120') equalised at 4-4 on aggregate. With the match reaching its final stages, Harry Maguire (120+1') headed in the winner, sending Old Trafford into raptures and sealing United's progression to the semi-finals.
