Lionel Messi has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo for the most non-penalty goals scored in football history, achieving the feat having played 167 fewer matches than his long-time rival.
The Argentine maestro netted twice and provided two assists in Inter Miami's 5-1 thrashing of New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday.
Messi's brace not only helped Inter Miami recover after conceding early within the opening 15 minutes, but also took the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's tally to 764 non-penalty goals in 1,114 career appearances.
By comparison, Ronaldo – a five-time Ballon d'Or recipient now playing for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr – has scored 763 non-penalty goals in 1,281 matches.
Saturday's performance also marked Messi's sixth brace in his last seven games, as he continues to top the MLS scoring charts with 18 goals this season.
