Kraigg Brathwaite steps down as West Indies Test captain
Alongside Brathwaite’s resignation, Shai Hope has been appointed captain of the T20I team in addition to his role as ODI skipper.

Kraigg Brathwaite has stepped down as West Indies' Test captain after leading the team for four years. Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced his decision yesterday, stating that a new Test captain will be named in the coming weeks.
Alongside Brathwaite's resignation, Shai Hope has been appointed captain of the T20I team in addition to his role as ODI skipper.
According to a CWI statement, Brathwaite had informed the board of his decision earlier this year to ensure a smooth transition within the team. He officially stepped down ahead of the upcoming Test series against Australia, allowing the new captain time to settle into the role. The three-match home Test series against Australia is set to begin on 25 June.
Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Brathwaite—who has played 98 Tests—will continue as a batter for the West Indies. Since taking over as Test captain in March 2021, he has led the team to several historic achievements, including:
-
A landmark Test victory in Brisbane (2024), marking West Indies' first win in Australia in 27 years.
-
A Test win in Pakistan after 34 years, helping the team level the series.
-
A home series victory against England in 2022.
-
A series win against Bangladesh in 2021.
