Late drama as Man City stun Liverpool at Anfield
The match concluded 2-1, with City moving to 50 points, maintaining pressure on league leaders Arsenal, who remain top of the table with 56 points
Manchester City produced a dramatic late comeback to beat Liverpool 2-1 in a Premier League encounter at Anfield on Sunday (8 February), in a match that will be remembered as one of the season's finest.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the 74th minute through Dominik Szoboszlai. The midfielder struck a swerving free kick from approximately 30 metres, which deflected on its trajectory and passed Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving Liverpool the lead and prompting a reaction from the home supporters.
City responded and levelled the score in the 84th minute. Rayan Cherki's cross was deflected towards Erling Haaland, who headed the ball into the path of Bernardo Silva. Silva evaded his marker and directed the ball past Alisson to make it 1-1.
The decisive moment occurred in stoppage time. Matheus Nunes advanced into the penalty area from the right and was fouled by Alisson, leading the referee to award a penalty.
Haaland successfully converted the spot-kick in the 90+3 minute, placing the ball into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
City briefly appeared to have extended their lead with a counter-attack goal, but VAR intervened. Szoboszlai, already booked, received a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, and the goal was subsequently disallowed.
The match concluded 2-1, with City moving to 50 points, maintaining pressure on league leaders Arsenal, who remain top of the table with 56 points.
