It's official: FC Barcelona leave European Super League
Barcelona’s exit leaves Real Madrid as the only club still publicly backing the proposal.
FC Barcelona have officially withdrawn from the European Super League project, the club confirmed in a statement today (7 February).
The club said it had formally notified the European Super League Company and the other clubs involved of its decision to step away from the project.
The move follows comments made by Barcelona President Joan Laporta in December, when he publicly signalled the club's intention to leave.
Speaking at a forum organised by Foros La Vanguardia (a Spanish daily newspaper based in Barcelona), Laporta said the club wanted peace and sustainability in football. He acknowledged that he had inherited the Super League situation and initially continued with it due to what he described as major imbalances created by state-backed clubs.
However, he said the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the project was no longer beneficial.
Barcelona were among the driving forces behind the European Super League proposal launched in 2021 by a group of leading European clubs.
The initiative aimed to create a private competition to rival or replace UEFA tournaments such as the Champions League, with the promise of higher revenues and greater financial stability for participating clubs.
The project faced widespread opposition and gradually lost support, with most founding clubs withdrawing. Barcelona's exit leaves Real Madrid as the only club still publicly backing the proposal.
The Catalan side were one of the original 12 clubs involved in the scheme.
