Germany seek perfect group stage as Ecuador fight for survival

Germany will look to complete a flawless Group E campaign when they face Ecuador in their final group-stage match on Wednesday (25 June), while the South Americans need a victory to keep their Fifa World Cup 2026 hopes alive.

Having already secured top spot in the group with back-to-back wins, Germany arrive at MetLife Stadium with momentum firmly on their side. 

Julian Nagelsmann's team have scored nine goals in two matches and booked their place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.

Ecuador, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter after a frustrating start to the tournament. 

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, they remain without a goal from their opening two matches and risk an early exit if they fail to claim all three points.

The South Americans have averaged 63.5% possession and registered 39 shots so far, but poor finishing has undermined their performances. 

Ecuador have created seven big chances, missed all seven and struck the woodwork four times – statistics that highlight a team struggling to turn control into results.

Germany have had no such problems. Die Mannschaft have been among the tournament's standout performers, combining attacking flair with clinical finishing. 

Striker Deniz Undav has led the charge with three goals and two assists, emerging as one of the stars of the group stage.

Even if Nagelsmann rotates his squad ahead of the knockout rounds, Germany possess enough quality in reserve to pose a significant threat.

For Ecuador, the challenge is clear: finally find the finishing touch that has eluded them and pull off a result against one of the tournament favourites. 

Germany, meanwhile, will be aiming to maintain their winning rhythm as they prepare for the knockout stage.
