DR Congo frustrate Portugal to secure 1-1 historic World Cup draw
At 41 years and 132 days old, Ronaldo became the oldest outfield player in World Cup history
Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Houston Stadium in Texas on Wednesday, as Cristiano Ronaldo set a new tournament record.
At 41 years and 132 days old, Ronaldo became the oldest outfield player in World Cup history, but the landmark appearance ended in disappointment as Portugal failed to convert their dominance into victory.
João Neves gave Portugal an early lead in the sixth minute, finishing off a move that appeared to put Roberto Martínez's side on course for a comfortable win.
However, DR Congo, making their first World Cup appearance in 52 years since competing as Zaire in 1974, stayed organised defensively and struck back through Yoane Wissa in first-half stoppage time.
The equaliser capped a disciplined first-half display from the African side, who absorbed sustained Portuguese pressure before capitalising on one of their limited opportunities.
Portugal controlled possession throughout the match, enjoying nearly 80% of the ball, but struggled to break down DR Congo's compact 5-3-2 formation.
Most of their attacking moves were halted before reaching dangerous areas, leaving the European side with little end product despite their territorial advantage.
The result leaves Group K finely balanced after the opening round of matches, with Portugal left searching for improvement ahead of their second group game and DR Congo celebrating a hard-earned point on their return to football's biggest stage.
