Bangladesh achieve first-ever sixth position in ICC Test rankings
Tigers reach their highest-ever position after Australia series.
Bangladesh have climbed to a historic sixth place in the latest ICC Test rankings, their highest-ever position in the format.
The Tigers, who had been ranked ninth, now have 78 rating points, moving ahead of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies. Sri Lanka are seventh with 76 points, Pakistan eighth with 75 and the West Indies ninth with 74.
The rise follows Bangladesh's 1-1 draw in their two-Test series against Australia, which included a historic nine-wicket victory in the opening match in Darwin. Australia bounced back in Mackay with an innings-and-51-run win to level the series.
Despite the heavy defeat in the second Test, Bangladesh's victory in Darwin provided enough of a boost to lift them three places in the rankings.
The sixth-place ranking surpasses Bangladesh's previous best of seventh, which they achieved in May after completing a 2-0 home series victory over Pakistan.
The latest milestone adds to Bangladesh's strong record in the limited-overs formats. They reached sixth in the ODI rankings in 2017, while their highest-ever T20I ranking was fourth in 2012.
The 1-1 series draw in Australia is particularly significant for Bangladesh, given their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil in Darwin. The Mackay defeat ended the tour on a disappointing note, but the Tigers return with their highest-ever Test ranking and renewed confidence in the longest format.
