BCB removes M Nazmul Islam as finance committee chair amid cricketers’ ultimatum
In protest against Nazmul’s controversial remarks about cricketers, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued an ultimatum on Wednesday night, demanding his resignation and threatening to boycott matches.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has removed M Nazmul Islam from his position as chairman of the finance committee in the face of an ultimatum from cricketers.
Until further instructions are issued, BCB president Aminul Islam will act as the finance committee's interim chairman. The information was confirmed in a BCB press release issued this afternoon.
In protest against Nazmul's controversial remarks about cricketers, the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued an ultimatum on Wednesday night, demanding his resignation and threatening to boycott matches. A deadline was set for this afternoon. However, Nazmul did not resign, and the cricketers went ahead with their boycott of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match that was scheduled to start at 1pm.
Later in the afternoon, the cricketers held another press conference, reiterating their firm stance on the demand for Nazmul's resignation. They also asked for an official announcement from the BCB within 48 hours.
Shortly afterwards, the BCB announced that director Nazmul had been removed from the finance committee.
In the press release, the BCB said that, after reviewing recent events and considering the organisation's best interests, the BCB president had decided to relieve Nazmul Islam of his duties as chairman of the finance committee with immediate effect.
The board added that the decision was taken under the authority vested in the BCB president by Article 31 of the BCB constitution, with the aim of ensuring that the board's activities continue smoothly and effectively.
The press release also stated that, until further notice, the BCB president would carry out the responsibilities of the finance committee chair.
Emphasising that "the interests of the cricketers are the highest priority", the BCB expressed hope that, during this difficult time, all players would demonstrate the utmost professionalism and commitment in the interests of the development of Bangladesh cricket and would make every effort to continue participating in the Bangladesh Premier League.
