Aubameyang targets World Cup debut with Gabon

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang believes Gabon are on the right path to securing their first-ever World Cup appearance as they prepare for a crucial Group F qualifier against Kenya on 24 march.

The 35-year-old forward, who missed Gabon's 3-0 victory over Seychelles, returns to lead the side in Nairobi, knowing a win would strengthen their position in the race for qualification.

"We're an ambitious team. We've come here with one goal—to win," said the former Arsenal striker. "Qualifying for the World Cup would be a historic achievement for us."

Gabon edged Kenya 2-1 in their first meeting in Franceville in november 2023 and currently sit second in the group with 12 points from five matches, just one behind leaders Ivory Coast.

Aubameyang, Africa's best player in 2015, had previously considered retiring from international football but has now committed to playing until at least 2030. His strike partner Denis Bouanga has been instrumental in Gabon's campaign, scoring five goals—one short of the continent's leading scorer, Mohamed Salah.

Kenya, under new coach Benni McCarthy, are fourth in the standings and desperate for a win to revive their qualification hopes. McCarthy's first match in charge saw Kenya play out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Gambia in Ivory Coast on Thursday.
