Shishir returns as Mark and Moeen part ways with Aurthohin
Aurthohin fans woke up to a bolt from the blue on the morning of 5 March as longtime drummer Mark Don and young guitarist Ehtesham Ali Moeen both took to social media to announce their departure. The news was met with significant surprise, coming less than six months after the release of the band's latest album, Phoenix er Diary 2, and a subsequent tour of North America. However, the initial shock of the morning was met with a surge of nostalgia and excitement by evening.
In an official statement, Aurthohin acknowledged the exit of the duo while simultaneously unveiling a new line-up, headlined by the monumental return of fan-favourite Shishir Ahmed on guitars and keyboards. Shishir was previously a staple of the band for nearly 15 years, having joined in 2003 for the landmark album Dhrubok and playing a pivotal role through the Aushomapto era before his departure in the late 2010s.
Regarding the departures, Mark Don, who served as the band's rhythmic heartbeat for a decade, shared a reflective message. "As of today, my journey with Aurthohin has come to an end. After a decade of doing this, it goes far beyond music," Don wrote. He further clarified his decision, adding, "This is simply growth, and growth sometimes means walking forward. I genuinely wish the band continues to successfully do what it does best!!"
Almost simultaneously, Moeen announced his exit to pursue independent creative ventures. "I'll be continuing my journey independently, exploring new creative directions and challenging myself to grow even further as an artiste. I wholeheartedly wish Aurthohin continued success and nothing but the very best in everything ahead," he stated.
While the news caught many off-guard, the band's leadership appeared to handle the transition with characteristic composure. Speaking to us for an initial reaction, frontman Bassbaba Sumon confirmed that the split was amicable and devoid of any "fiasco."
Sumon noted, "There weren't any massive disagreements. It was all handled smoothly. Aurthohin will keep making music like always."
Despite the lack of animosity, the departure stems from a divergence in musical ambitions, as the creative directions of the departing members no longer aligned with the band's immediate future.
In their official announcement, Aurthohin bid a "heavy-hearted" farewell to Don and Moeen, noting their "undeniable" contributions to the band's soul. Yet, as they turn the page, they are thrilled to welcome new blood alongside Shishir.
Joining the ranks are Adnan Atique on keyboards and guitars, and guest drummer Sheikh M Riaz of Mechanix, who is expected to bring a "devastating new energy" to the rhythm section.
The announcement concluded with a defiant promise to the fans: "Aurthohin is not dead!"
