Palestinian star barred from Oscars by US travel ban
Palestinian actor Motaz Malhees has announced he will be unable to attend this Sunday's Academy Awards due to a United States travel ban targeting Palestinian citizens. Malhees features as a lead call centre operator in the critically acclaimed film The Voice of Hind Rajab, which has secured a nomination for Best International Feature Film.
The production depicts the harrowing true story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old girl killed by Israeli forces in Gaza in 2024. Malhees confirmed via Instagram that his Palestinian citizenship prevents his entry into the US, stating it "hurts" to miss the prestigious ceremony.
The restriction stems from a December proclamation by President Donald Trump, which limits entry for individuals using travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority, citing security concerns.
The film also honours Hind's family and the paramedics killed during the rescue attempt. While other cast members with dual nationality are expected to attend, Malhees remains restricted. The US Department of State has yet to comment on the actor's situation.
