Minecraft opens big at box office
Hollywood found a much-needed hit as 'A Minecraft Movie' stormed the box office, earning $157 million domestically and $144 million globally in its opening weekend, totaling $301 million. The PG-rated video game adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, now holds the record for the biggest debut of any video game-based film, surpassing 'The Super Mario Bros Movie'.
Released in over 4,200 locations in North America and 36,000 screens worldwide, the film exceeded industry forecasts of $80 million. Warner Bros executives praised the response, noting the film's appeal to families and younger audiences.
Directed by Jared Hess, the adventure comedy follows characters trapped in the Overworld, blending humor and action to wide audience approval, despite mixed critical reviews.
The success shrinks 2025's box office deficit from 13% to just 5% compared to last year, giving Hollywood renewed momentum. Runner-up 'A Working Man' made $7.3 million, while 'The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2' followed with $7 million.
