'Golden' from 'KPop Demon Hunters' scripts Oscars history with best original song win
This marked the film's second win of the night, coming after its earlier triumph in the best animated film category.
"Golden," among the popular tracks from "KPop Demon Hunters," has made history as the first K-pop song to claim the Academy Award for best original song.
Ejae, 24, Ido and Teddy Park also made history on Sunday (15 March) as the first South Korean winners in this category.
While Ejae delivered a heartfelt speech, Mark Sonnenblick had his remarks cut short before he could finish, reports The Guardian.
This Oscar marked the film's second win of the night, coming after its earlier triumph in the best animated film category.
"For those of you who look like me, I'm so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this, but it is here. That means the next generations don't have to go longing," said Maggie Kang, the film's co-writer and co-director, accepting that earlier award. "This is for Korea and Koreans everywhere."
The song claimed victory over entries from "Sinners," "Train Dreams," "Viva Verdi!" and "Diane Warren: Relentless" – the latter meaning Warren has further extended her record-setting Oscars losing streak, failing once again to turn her 17th nomination into a win.
"KPop Demon Hunters" follows Huntrix – Rumi, Mira and Zoey – a global KPop girl group who juggle superstardom with their secret lives as demon hunters, reports Reuters.
The animated musical fantasy previously swept major awards, winning best animated feature and best song at the 31st Critics Choice Awards and best animated motion picture and best original song at the 83rd Golden Globes.
Animated by Sony Pictures Animation, the Netflix hit also earned a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first‑ever Grammy win for a K-pop song.
