Delayed opening for Amar Ekushey Book Fair
The historic Amar Ekushey Book Fair is set to commence on 20 February this year, diverging from the traditional start date of 1 February. Dr Md Selim Reza, Member Secretary of the organising committee, confirmed the schedule during a press conference at Bangla Academy, citing unavoidable logistical realities for the delay.
To support the literary community, Bangla Academy has announced a 25 per cent reduction in stall rents following requests from publishers. The fair, which celebrates Bengali cultural heritage and the language martyrs, will host 551 entities at Suhrawardy Udyan, including 24 newcomers. Despite some publishers suggesting a post-Eid schedule, organisers deemed an April fair unrealistic due to the heightened risks of heatwaves, dust pollution, and seasonal nor'wester storms.
As the event coincides with the month of Ramadan, Professor Mohammad Azam, Director General of Bangla Academy, assured that comprehensive arrangements are in place. These include dedicated areas for Taraweeh prayers, multiple Iftar food stalls, and enhanced water supplies. While acknowledging the challenges of a Ramadan schedule, publishers have committed to participating in the month-long celebration of literature.
