Britney Spears arrested for DUI in California
She was booked in the early hours of Thursday at around 3:02am and released shortly after 6am. Since then, Spears deleted her Instagram profile.
90's iconic "Princess of Pop" Singer Britney Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday night (4 March) for driving under the influence.
Spears was stopped and handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol at about 9:28pm local time, as first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by Variety, reports The Guardian.
She was booked in the early hours of Thursday at around 3:02am and released shortly after 6am.
After her release, Spears deleted her Instagram profile. Her most recent post was captioned: "Song representing fragility be careful my friends when dealing with the queen of hearts."
Her arrest comes days after Spears secured a restraining order against a 51-year-old man from Louisiana who had allegedly been harassing her since 2013. According to court filings, the man appeared at her Los Angeles home after making several "disturbing social media posts".
This is not Spears' first run-in with the law. In 2007, she faced four misdemeanour charges following an alleged hit-and-run involving a parked car in Los Angeles. The charges were later dropped after she compensated the vehicle's owner for damages.
In February, it was revealed that Spears sold the rights to her music catalogue in late 2025 in a reported $200m deal. The catalogue was acquired by independent music publisher Primary Wave following the end of the singer's 13-year conservatorship, which Spears has described as "abusive".
During the conservatorship, Spears had no control over her assets or finances. "Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself … My father and his associates having control over my body and my money … makes me feel sick," she wrote in her bestselling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me.
The deal transferred ownership of several of her hit songs, including "...Baby One More Time", "Lucky", and "Everytime". Primary Wave also owns catalogues belonging to artists such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Nicks and Prince.
In January, Spears said in a lengthy Instagram post that she would "never perform in the US again", citing "extremely sensitive reasons". She added that she may still perform internationally, saying she hoped to appear "in the UK and Australia very soon".
Spears' most recent studio album was Glory, released in 2016. Since the end of her conservatorship in 2021, she has made limited public appearances but has remained active on social media.
She has also released several singles, including the 2022 collaboration with Elton John "Hold Me Closer" and 2023's "Mind Your Business" with will.i.am.
