Anjan Dutt, Roopa Ganguly reunite on screen after three decades
The duo was last seen together in their acclaimed pairing in Aparna Sen’s 1995 film "Yugant"
Veteran actors Anjan Dutt and Roopa Ganguly are set to share the screen as a lead couple after a 31-year hiatus in debutant director Samarpon Sengupta's upcoming feature film, "Pratyabartan".
The duo was last seen together in their acclaimed pairing in Aparna Sen's 1995 film "Yugant".
"Pratyabartan" marks Samarpon's first foray into big-screen feature filmmaking.
The director describes the film as a reflection of modern urban life, characterised by an unending cycle of fast living, digital dependence, and emotional loneliness inside the boxed homes.
The narrative explores the "frightening pursuit" of fame and social status by a couple and the subsequent toll it takes on their family dynamics.
The film chronicles the journey of Dr Dipankar Sanyal, portrayed by Anjan, a surgeon who migrates from a remote village in West Bengal's Purulia district to Kolkata in search of success.
As Dipankar and his wife Shalini, played by Roopa, chase professional growth and social comfort, their emotional bonds begin to erode.
The plot culminates in a crisis when their teenage daughter, Disha, isolated by her parents' ambitions, turns to social media in a search for identity.
The director said he considers himself fortunate to have such seasoned performers anchoring his maiden venture.
"The film aims to spark self-reflection, reminding audiences that success means little if we lose touch with what truly matters," according to Samarpon.
"In today's time, we hardly have time for the person existing beside us. We are busy with our mobile phones and often fail to speak even for two minutes with our loved ones. Many people suffer from loneliness," Samarpon told PTI, adding that the story emerges from these everyday realities.
Sengupta said the characters in "Pratyabartan" are firmly rooted in lived experience, reflecting the sense of dislocation faced by those who migrate from districts to cities in search of opportunity.
